Cortinarius semisanguineus can also be classified as Dermocybe semisanguinea (according to this, it’s the same mushroom). Its name in English is surprise webcap or red-gilled webcap although most dyers seem to refer to it by its systematic name. Its gills have a strong red color, perhaps that is the “surprise” part to see the strong red color after turning over a rather dull brown mushroom.
Farve (Color)
According to Lundmark and Marklund, Cortinarius semisanguineus contains the red dye dermocybin and yellow-orange emodin. Both are found in a group of natural colorants called antraquinones.
The photo below shows first, second and third bath using whole mushrooms – a wonderful, dusty red.
Lystest (Light Testing)
Her ses lystest af 1. bad udsat for ca. 500 timers lys.
The red color from Cortinarius semisanguineus has good light-fastness. Here is a light test of yarn from the 1st bath, exposed to 500 hours of daylight (right side was exposed). The color change was very small.
